FINDING CERTAINTY IN AN UNCERTAIN WORLD

Recent events around the world are shaking our sense of certainty in a great many things. Certainty of the basic goodness of human beings. Certainty that we are safe in our own homes. Certainty that we know who our neighbors are. Certainty that if we work hard and follow the rules we will have a secure and rewarding life.

Perhaps these certainties have not been sure for quite some time. But when we see innocent people being killed while simply going about their everyday lives it tends to make us even less certain and can open the door to stress, anxiety, fear, and other responses that hinder our general sense of security and well-being.

During my lifetime, like many people, I have experienced things I never could have imagined. I lived in Los Angeles where two devastating earthquakes rocked me both in childhood and adolescence. I remember seeing objects flying off the shelves in my home, breaking on the floor, light fixtures swinging like there was someone standing on the ceiling and shaking the whole building. It was like the Earth itself was no longer solid and I felt sure that my feet beneath me could be counted on to keep me steady.

Later on, I lived two blocks away from the World Trade Center in New York City when the 9/11 terrorist attacks occurred. I could not return to my neighborhood because it had become a smoldering hole instead of the shopping, business, and transportation center I used in my daily life. I could not get back into my apartment because my street was covered in ashes six feet deep. Though I was fortunate to keep my life, I saw and knew many others who were not so lucky. I have, to this day, the “WTC Cough,” a daily reminder that the “greatest city on planet Earth” as it was introduced to me when I moved there, was not immune to unpredictable acts of violence.

More recently I, as you who are reading this probably can relate, endured the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a terrifying situation to find that a disease of unknown origin with unknown transmission methods and unknown consequences spreads like wildfire throughout not only your country but all over the world. Because of my “9/11 lungs,” I was especially frightened as COVID-19 had, when it first began, dire consequences related to the respiratory system. My fear propelled my response with extreme isolation and precaution, fortunately preventing me from becoming infected during that scary time. Of course, it did impact my mental state, and I could not avoid knowing others who were affected in so many ways.

What I have learned as a result of these and other unexpected events in life is that there’s no way for you to prevent uncertainty. It’s just a naturally occurring phenomenon that none of us can control, no matter how much we might like.

What we can do, however, is find certainty within ourselves. You can develop your resilience, nurture your sense of personal security, bolster your “grit,” and educate yourself through the use of transformational tools like hypnosis, neuro-linguistic programming, and coaching. I have used these tools to help myself. We can truly chart our own course, and overcome even the deepest-seeded doubts, fears, and negative programming that has plagued us in our lives. We can be the people that we want to be and achieve the things we want to achieve. No person, no circumstance, no unknown act of evil can stop us – if we put our whole mind to the task.

If you are seeking to move forward in your life, I have tools that can help. Get rid of anxiety, stress, anger, or fear, and gain clarity of purpose, confidence, or greater impact. Or finally take control of your own future by choosing to put yourself at the top of your “To Do” list. It would help me fulfill my purpose and goals to help you realize yours.
